Hannah Georgas - Bang Bang You’re Dead [Folk]
Because I couldn’t think of anything else.
George Harrison - Awaiting On You All [Pop]
Ever heard of a band called the Beatles? Well, he played in them. They were alright, I suppose.
Motorpsycho - No Evil [Rock/Psychedelic]
Here’s a band I’ve been obsessed over for the last few months — Motorpsycho. They’ve been around for two decades, worked in numerous genres, released even more numerous albums, and have been largely ignored everywhere but their native Norway. This year, they released Heavy Metal Fruit, one of the best albums this year, but this selection is what kicked off their 2006 album Black Hole / Blank Canvas. Let that opening guitar arrangement get stuck in your head!
Extra Life - Black Hoodie [Avant-Garde/Math Rock/Experimental]
Man it’s hard to classify this band. They’re just… so out there. “Black Hoodie” is from their latest album, Made Flesh, which is truly stunning. It’s one of the softer moments from the band, as well. Tomorrow I’ll feature their more experimental side, after I decide which one I need to convert to meet the restrictions!
Max Roach - Freedom Day [Jazz]
Max Roach oozes cool, and this song is no different; though, I suppose that the album this comes from, Freedom Now Suite, is more chaotic and demanding than the other Roach album I’ve heard, It’s Time. I don’t have a preference between the two approaches — they both work oh so well.
Dessa - Crew [Hip-Hop]
Another song from this brilliant debut LP by Dessa. Do you love a feel-good hip-hop song as much as I do? I sure hope so!
Dessa - Children’s Work [Hip-Hop]
Dessa’s new album is out. If you haven’t heard of her, she is possibly the best MC on the Doomtree label. A label that also features P.O.S., so that is quite the compliment. I haven’t had time to digest the entire album yet, but it’s good. Cutting, intelligent, powerful. Overall, an excellent debut LP. “Children’s Work” is the first song on the album.
Nine Horses - Darkest Birds [Jazz/Electronic]
I’ve really been digging this song for the last few days; it’s enchanting.
Basia Bulat - Go On [Folk]
What a wonderful way to open an album.
Basia Bulat - Oh, My Darling [Folk]
I’ve heard that Basia Bulat, she of the wonderful voice, has a new album coming out soon. So why not introduce some (most, all) to one of Canada’s many great songwriters? It’s short and sweet; oh so sweet.
Sonic Youth - Eric’s Trip (Demo) [Acoustic]
This striped down demo of one of the better songs on Daydream Nation show how touching Sonic Youth can be.
Beach House - 10 Mile Stereo [Dream Pop]
Hello.
Dan Mangan - Robots [Folk/Singer-Songwriter]
I suppose that this song is a bit of a continuation of yesterday’s, or at the very least another popular song by the Smiths. Morrissey, in the excellent ‘How Soon is Now?’ croons “I am human and I need to be loved.” Well, here, Vancouver’s Dan Mangan counters that robots need love too.
The Smiths - This Charming Man [Pop]
Here’s a little bit of some Smiths for a lovely Fall afternoon.
Karen O and the Kids - Hidaway [Folk]
